Wanted: used 20 inch kids bike
Derek, did you ever get a look in that shed? Just curious since it's been a week or so and Ronald's grandson's birthday is coming up in April.
Ronald, if that one doesn't pan out, yard sale season is about to start up around here and 20 inch bikes show up all the time. I've picked up two for my nephews over the years for $10 to $15 apiece, usually out in the driveway with the other kid stuff. Shobe Road, the subdivisions off Reynolds, and over toward Benton on the weekends are the best bet. Mid-March through May is when the church sales get going too, and ours always has a few bikes that nobody claims.
Check the brake lever and the tires for dry rot before you hand over cash. Chains and flats are easy fixes, but cracked tires and seized brakes add up.
Ronald, Caleb's right about the yard sales, but keep an eye on the forecast. March around here can go from sunny to a stormy mess in one weekend, and a lot of people just cancel when it looks like rain. If you see a good one posted, go early.
One more thing to look at is the tires. If he's going to ride more than the driveway, ones with a little tread hold up better than the slick ones. Bishop Park has a nice paved loop for a kid's first real rides, and the trails by Lake Norrell are fun once he's more confident, though that's a few years out for a 7 year old. A bike that rolls smooth on pavement and doesn't fight the gravel is worth a few extra dollars.
Derek, if you do find that bike in the shed, hit the tires with a little air first. Sitting in a shed over summer usually just means dry rot and a stuck chain, not a dead bike. Good luck Ronald, he's gonna love it.
