Salt Bowl, still stinging or have we all moved on?

I know it's been months, but I was thinking about that Benton game again this week while I was up on a ladder cleaning out the gutters. Up 42-14 and then 43-42. I was in the stands that night and I have never heard a crowd go that quiet. Seven yards on fourth down with the clock at zero, and then they went for two and got it. My husband still won't talk about it at supper.

The last time Benton won that game was 2005, and we had won 26 straight before it. I'll admit I'd gotten spoiled. You start thinking it's just how the night goes.

Saw the write-up again and it still reads like a bad dream: Benton Panthers upset the Bryant Hornets in Salt Bowl 43-42

So be honest. Does it still sting for you, or have you moved on? And was it the worst loss you've ever had to sit through in person? I've watched a lot of Hornet football on Friday nights and I can't think of one that hurt like this, mostly because we looked so sure of it at halftime.

If you were out at Hornet Stadium that night, where were you sitting when it turned?

Still stings a little, not gonna lie. We were about halfway up on the home side and when they scored the first time we all figured ok, still got time, we'll stop the two-point... and then nothing. Just that weird quiet you're talking about. Kids around us didn't even know what to do, one little guy just kept asking if it was over.

Worst loss in person for me, yeah, mostly cause of how it happened. I've sat through worse scores but never one where we were up 28 at the half and felt that good about it.

The part I didn't see coming was Monday at work. Half my building lives in Benton and I heard about it all week, nicely but still. I just kept saying 2005 was a long time to wait and they earned it. Through gritted teeth, ha.

Hoping the younger kids coming up through the youth league take it as a lesson more than a wound. Never let up, that kind of thing.

still stings some but 26 straight is a heck of a run, cant stay mad too long. Remember when that game was a coin flip every year, so i guess we got spoiled like Dolores said.

Your right about the youth league tho. Aint over till the clock says zero. I ate crow with my brother in law in Benton that next week, smoked him a butt to go with it. He ate it and still grinned the whole time

smoking a butt for the guy who beat you is a classic move 😂 respect. i'm 22 and that's still the worst one i've sat through, can't even watch the highlights.

Haha wyatt you're 22, you got plenty more heartbreak comin, thats just Hornet football. Ronald had the right idea tho, a butt on the smoker fixes most things. I sat there starring at the scoreboard til they shut the lights off.

Derek, I think half the home side did the same thing. We stayed put until the band had packed up and the folks with the trash bags were working their way down the bleachers. My husband finally said they were going to lock us in, and I still didn't want to stand up.

I might pass the smoker idea along to him. He won't discuss that game at supper, but he's never turned down pulled pork. Wyatt, hang in there. At my age you'll have a whole shelf of these, and the good Fridays make up for it.

tell your husband 225 and hickory, dont rush it. about 10 or 12 hrs for a good butt, and let it rest in a towel in the cooler before you pull it. Pulled pork wont fix the scoreboard but it helps at suppr time lol
